Who am I and what do I do?
Hi, I’m Joe, I’m a photographer specializing in documentary style wedding photography. I’m a bit of an introvert so my style and approach is relaxed and candid. I’m based in Southport and I cover the north-west of England, that includes Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria, Manchester and Merseyside.
When did you get into photography?
When I was 16 I was studying art a-level, I initially going to specialize in painting and illustration, until I entered a photography competition and by fluke ended up winning first prize. The prize was a Sony Cybershot, a 8.1mp camera, which I then used to create a portfolio to apply for my national diploma in photography.
What qualifications do you have?
After graduating college with triple distinction in photography I went and applied for a degree in photography. In hindsight I probably should have just read books and anyone looking to get a degree in photography I would probably not recommend it. Its great for networking and having a framework of what information is important but all of this is available online, you just have to know what to search. The biggest take-away from uni was its positive impact on me as a person by encouraging critical thinking.
How long have you been photographing weddings?
This is my 4th year of photographing weddings professionally. I got into weddings in my second year of uni; there was an opportunity to photograph a wedding for experience, so I thought ‘why not’. I got the gig and turns out weddings aren’t so bad! I always assumed you had to be super traditional, but there are so many different styles of wedding photography.
How do you photograph a wedding?
I photography weddings in a reportage or documentary way, essentially staying out of the way for the most part. I capture moments as they happen, with minimal interference on my part. I want my images of your wedding to reflect the day how it really happened, honest, natural and authentic.
How do you edit your photos?
I process my images with a vintage style to give your wedding photos a trendy yet timeless feel. Here are a few sample wedding photo galleries.
What hobbies and interests?
In the summer I like to head up to the lake district to fell walk or go camping. I play a bit of guitar, although I am a bit out of practice at the moment. I dabble in home-brewing craft beer, been doing that for 5 years. I play some competitive PC games when I have the time.
What or who inspires you?
Movies, I find myself often thinking about how a scene was shot with lighting and composition. I am a big fan of Stanley Kubrick, David Fincher, Martin Scorsese and more. I’m also inspired by artists and painters such as Edward Hopper and photographers like Robert Capa. Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, the list could go on…
