The cost of a wedding photographer can vary depending on numerous things, here are a few examples:
- Distance – if they have to travel far without accommodation
- Reputation – often times a photographers price reflects their brand
- Coverage – how many hours they will spend photographing editing
- Products – any albums, prints, digital products or other deliverables
Of course there are many other reasons that might cause a photographer to bump up their prices, such as their education, cost of photographic equipment, insurance, unique style, business expenses and bills…
What is the average cost of a wedding photographer in the UK?
This is a tough question because it really depends on what they offer and what they think they are worth. Wedding photography prices can range all the way from £500 to £2000 (or more). If you are looking to hire a two wedding photographers team, you are looking at £1000 base line.
Second shooters generally cost around £200 for full day coverage. The wedding photographer might price this a little higher however as it means they have to edit through twice as many photos.
How do we know you arent just saying all this to justify your pricing? I’m in contact with north-west UK wedding photographers almost daily, I know what most of the good ones charge, that is all I can say.
The quick answer: I’d say the average cost of a wedding photographer is between £1250 and £1500.
Award winning wedding photographers generally charge over £1500 and are usually hired for their unique style, especially if they are the fine-art type.
How to justify paying so much for wedding photography
The short answer? the same way you justify paying for anything else you want.
Wedding photography is essentially your first family heirloom, something that will stick around for many generations. Sure the flowers, wedding car, and everything else is important too but those products and services are temporary.
The value of your wedding photos will increases with time, as you get older they’ll become one of your most cherished possessions. My father is an ex-fireman, and one of the most common things people run back into burning buildings for is their wedding album.
At the end of the day, only YOU can decide what something is worth, consider wedding photography an investment.
How do wedding photographers price themselves?
Wedding photographers will usually offer packages or collections that they feel is the baseline for any couple needing wedding photos. This will often include a USB of fully edited images, whether you receive the images with watermark or not depends on the photographer.
TIP – It is very important to find out exactly what you are getting before you book them. Some wedding photographers have a separate pricing structure where they sell you the un-watermarked high resolution images AFTER you have seen the proofs.
A wedding photographer might seem cheap at first, but if you have to pay for hidden extras, it all adds up. This is not always the case however, and I have seen some fantastic work from cheaper wedding photographers.
Some photographers are just new to the wedding industry and are trying to build up their portfolio, others do it for fun or are part-time. When hiring a wedding photographer, I suggest choosing them based off their style and not their price, if you shop by price you risk disappointment.
